Multi Adapter

After some sceptical views on my brief to package candles for men i had a look around at some packaging for candles and how to actually loose the very feminine view on them. These are a great set of packaging for candles that relate to song lyrics as well as relevant to a candle, i think this would work in getting people to buy this product FOR men, rather than men themselves buying it. This is something I think I'm going to alter within the brief  as it will give me more to work with and a better audience to aim for.

What a great idea for a book, the new pop up book. All the pages in this book fold out and out again to reveal more design, this is a great way to get people interacting with books today and enjoying the experience.

I especially like the way they have designed the map to fold out, having it confined into the book and then bit by bit folding out to actual size while having relevant information throughout.

Benoît Bodhuin

I got quite excited when I saw this on Behance as I had this idea of containing the ticket within the leaflet so that it was more accessibly and so I really like how they have attached this centre leaflet within the first leaflet.

To the point / Hyde Park Picture House - publications

To the point is a local leeds publicaiton that i picked up at an illustration exhibition in Leeds and thought it was a great publication design. Its A5 size and folds out to an A1 poster size, but it contains something different on each page, different layouts and information which makes it really interesting to look through.

It also uses the 2 colour process very well, leaving the white stock to a minimal making it really pop out again the yellow black.

Well we have all seen this, the Hyde Park Picture House publication, but this year I have noticed how well designed it is. Using the yellow and black with white stock again emphasises the white areas. One think I love about this publication is the use to three column grid, I always think its a great alternative to the 2 column and it works really well here. The long thin framed images also work well and give it that quirkiness that is the Hyde Park Picture House.

Publication Design

I managed to get into the library and have a look through the current publications that they have there and found some great examples of editorial design that i think would work in my own practice. These are from such magazins as 'Colors', 'Made' and Creative Review.

It was great to see this reversed out typography, which is what i have been using in some of my work. I think its a great way to really bring out a title on top of an image.

Iv put this up here simply because i love these colours, i was drawn to it straight away, I am a huge fan of using big bold colours to enhance design.

Monica Gonzalez Romero

I am really inspired with the format of this publication, its simple, compact and usable. Having something that holds all the information in one place e.g. flash cards, publication would work well for the material i am designing for the new InteRail starter pack. Having a map, tickets and an info leaflet can get confusing and messy to handle so i want to create something compact to hold them all, even if they become separate when used.

Gorman - Astronomy Booklet

I found these few publication designs on fffffound so I cant be sure of their origin but i found the name Gorman by them all.

This first design is very simple, very clean and crisp but its very effective. Its a bit to minimal for my personal approach but i think its a great example of how type can hold the page.

This design is really interesting, its a small booklet but enclosed in this folded case. Its a really nice way of packaging a booklet or publication and makes it something more special to open rather than something mass produced and cheap to make.

These next deal with editorial and astronomy and have a slip leaflet attached inside the main booklet. This slip folds out to a small poster containing a lot of information about the solar system and our universe. Its an effective way of breaking up the information and playing with the format more to keep people interested.

What a beautiful piece of design, this layout is so simple but for me its beautiful. I love working with a 3 column grid in my personal work and this is a great example of why it works so well. Also that the photos work within the layout and obviously considered carefully when this was being designed.

Great piece of screen printing here, working with a black stock and printing white/silver which is best done through screen printing. The format works well as a small leaflet that folds out to view the images together.

Richard Powell - Polyhedron Skyglobe

This is just brilliant, this model by Richard Powell makes a paper globe of our solar system when put together, which of course im trying to do right now. I think this would be great to get something like this to out in my astronomy packs as i think its something that most people would love to do, more interactive fun.

Astronomy Picture A Day

This site is brilliant, basically they post one picture ever day that relates to astronomy, this can be a photo of our universe to a painting by Van Gough. Check them all out here.
Im going to be using some of these pictures to develop my work further, even if its just using a colour sample of them. But i want to have images that show directly how amazing our universe is and not just draw out planets representing our solar system, as i think this is important to show people how beautiful and alive it actually is.
