DDB - Philips energy saving campaign

This is a great advertisement campaign for Philips energy saving light bulbs. Very much like my own work at the moment they have used glow in the dark inks on the posters so that only when its dark can you see what they are advertising! Very clever idea, but it doesn't seem to have any sort of information on it, not even the companies name!

Gorman - Astronomy Booklet

I found these few publication designs on fffffound so I cant be sure of their origin but i found the name Gorman by them all. 

This first design is very simple, very clean and crisp but its very effective. Its a bit to minimal for my personal approach but i think its a great example of how type can hold the page.

This design is really interesting, its a small booklet but enclosed in this folded case. Its a really nice way of packaging a booklet or publication and makes it something more special to open rather than something mass produced and cheap to make.

These next deal with editorial and astronomy and have a slip leaflet attached inside the main booklet. This slip folds out to a small poster containing a lot of information about the solar system and our universe. Its an effective way of breaking up the information and playing with the format more to keep people interested. 

What a beautiful piece of design, this layout is so simple but for me its beautiful. I love working with a 3 column grid in my personal work and this is a great example of why it works so well. Also that the photos work within the layout and obviously considered carefully when this was being designed.

Great piece of screen printing here, working with a black stock and printing white/silver which is best done through screen printing. The format works well as a small leaflet that folds out to view the images together.

Richard Powell - Polyhedron Skyglobe

This is just brilliant, this model by Richard Powell makes a paper globe of our solar system when put together, which of course im trying to do right now. I think this would be great to get something like this to out in my astronomy packs as i think its something that most people would love to do, more interactive fun.

Astronomy Picture A Day

This site is brilliant, basically they post one picture ever day that relates to astronomy, this can be a photo of our universe to a painting by Van Gough. Check them all out here.

Im going to be using some of these pictures to develop my work further, even if its just using a colour sample of them. But i want to have images that show directly how amazing our universe is and not just draw out planets representing our solar system, as i think this is important to show people how beautiful and alive it actually is.

Alexander Flores

These Observer cover designs by Alexander Flores are really interesting to my practice right now. This first cover has taken a really interesting approach to using a simple colour range. I have been experimenting with laying over block colour to a grey scale image to make it more interesting and I love the way that Flores has done it here with a simple circle of colour to highlight the creature behind the text. We no longer loose the image behind the text but more look past the text to the image first before reading it.

This second cover obviously relates to my current astronomy project but i have mainly looked at this cover because to the way they have separated the sections of text. The coloured circles/planets make this cover a lot more interesting but still with a high typographic resolution.

Astronomy - publication

This is a small publication that Anthony brought back from his summer in Berlin. I couldn't read the content or see who it was design by but i really like the format of it. The hidden text/title underneath the cover is intriguing and dose make you want to look in it, however im not keen on the two different stocks used for the front, it has made the colours come out different and i think it would have worked better if they had been the same.

Tom Bourne

These book covers by Tom Bourne are based around the planets in our solar system and there is one for each of them. Very simple image using the texture of each planet as the back ground image. One thing i really like about these covers is that the white circle shape changes size to represent each planet more accurately. It would have been easy to use one generic white circle but it shows that he has thought about the design. 

However the overall design doesn't work for me, i think it has become to simplistic and the contrast between some of the photos and the vector images don't work together.

Astronomy - Glen Simonov

These designs by Glen Simonov were designed for April's Global Astronomy Month, they include solar events throughout the year within our solar system.

Very simple designs and little colour that work well in showing the information in a visually pleasing way.  I would really like to see something like this with a more crafted approach as most of the visuals iv seen based on space have been vector. So If I'm going to aim my project at kids aged 8-12 then i think this will be a more successful way to involve them.

Astronomy - Simon Page

Simon Page is a designer who I have been looking at all summer and who has inspired me for my first chosen brief on producing an astronomy pack for kids.

It was his series of posters for the International year of Astronomy 09 that I first saw and I just realised how simple something can be to give a message. These posters are made up of circles and lines and even without the title we understand what the subject matter is about. I think the simplicity of these posters is why they are so successful.

I am aiming to use some of these simple techniques in my own project to connect with kids and connect with them about astronomy
